POPULAR PRINTING IN ISLAMIC NORTH AFRICA Two chromolithographed posters, measuring 368 by 532mm. Horse melee print: historical paper repairs to the verso of the tail margin, dormant mould to the margin. Solomon: crease to the left tail corner. Both prints: light patches of water staining to the margins, some creasing and small closed tears. In good condition and suitable for framing. Cairo, Fine Arts Press, no date but [c.1920-30].

Dealer Notes

A striking pair of devotional and literary posters printed in North Africa during the first half of the twentieth century. The printer’s slug states that they were printed at the Fine Art Press in Cairo. McBurney notes that this was likely connected “to the College of Fine Arts established in 1908, whose students and faculty were closely involved with the development of Modern Egyptian Art.

In a larger format than typical, the first shows Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Amr ibn 'Abd Wud al-Amiri fighting on horseback at the Battle of the Trench. The second shows Solomon (Suliman) surrounded by his army, djinns and animals. They provide insights into how Quranic passages were represented in popular print culture across the Maghreb.
