Book Description

London: Field & Tuer with Simpkin, Marshall & Co and Hamilton, Adams & Co., 1883. First edition thus. This is a very good copy. In printed blue wraps, which have some unfortunate major spotting present, mainly to the front panel, with a band of separation to the bottom edge. Thirty two internal, and external woodcuts (two to rear panel, one to the front panel), many of which appear coloured by hand. The internals are pristine, and the reverse of the front panel dons the bookplate of R. C. Fiske of North Walsham, an architectural surveyor and local historian. There are no inscriptions. This is, overall, a very good copy. Number IV. in Crawhall's Chap-Book Chaplets, which were published by Field & Tuer with Simpkin, Marshall & Co and Hamilton, Adams & Co., and printed by the Leadenhall Press. It is a Norfolk ballad, depicting Jemmy the sailor, and Nancy a rich merchants only daughter. Written, in places, in Norfolk (my own) dialect see shewing on page five. This is the first edition in this form, with the tale being published in chapbook form many years prior. The only commercially available copy at present.
