Book Description

Three letters written in the hand of E. W. B. Nicholson (1849-1912), one of which is a postcard depicting the Bodleian Library. Ranging from 138x88mm to 180x119mm. The earliest letter of the three is on Bodleian Library paper, and dated 8. 10. 1887. It reads: 'Dear Madam, | I am sorry to find | that we have not got the | Spectator. | Yours faithfully | E. B. Nicholson | Librarian'. The second, also on the same stationary, is dated 1 Nov. 1888. It reads: 'My dear Courtney, | Our Curator have declined | to lend the 2 MSS. | Do you lend yours? | If so, I will ask the For. Office | whether the applicant wants | it any longer now that he | cannot have ours as well. | He might prefer collating | the 3 together in Oxford | yours very truly | E. B. Nicholson'. The third, the postcard depicting the Bod, is dated 13. 3. 1904, and addressed to Alfred Trübner Nutt (1856-1910). It reads: 'The Keltic-speaking colonists of these | isles were apparently a tall, fair race. | The nighgrescence of the modern Keltic area | is apparently due not to them but to the | survival of the vastly more numerous | aborigines, who may have been non-| Aryan and of more than one race. | There is by this time probably hardly one pure specimen | of the original Keltic colonists left: intermarriage | has altered the type everywhere. | as to the | modern | ethical | difference | between | Keny & | (?) | many | social & | historical | factors have to be | taken into | account, as | well as | possible | differences | of the | respective | aboriginal | races of | late. | Many thanks: will | send a copy to | Folk-lore as you | suggest | E. W. B. N'. A nice trio of handwritten letters from the past Bodleian Librarian, who served in his post from 1882 until his death in 1912.
