Book Description

London: The Cresset Press, 1947. First edition, first printing. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust jacket is a touch toned at the spine and very sparsely (and very faintly) foxed. It has not been price clipped (12/6 net). In the publisher s magenta cloth as issued, the boards are lightly bumped at the corners and spine tips there is a touch of staining at the bottom edge. The text blocks, though mostly clean, are with some spots. John Morris has inscribed this copy to Sir Philip Gibbs in blue ink on the front flyleaf: 'To Sir Philip Gibbs | from a life-long | admirer of The Street of | [a]dventure | - John Morris | 27.5.57'. This wonderful inscription not only shows admiration from Morris s part, but acknowledges Gibbs The Street of Adventure (1909). It is accompanied by a handwritten letter, also addressed to Sir Philip Gibbs. On Broadcasting House paper, it reads: 'as from | 46, Hornton Court | Campden Hill Road | Kensington W.8 | 27. 7. 57 | Dear Sir Philip | I thought you might perhaps be interested in this (now, of course, out-of- | date) account of Japan | as I saw it at the | end of the war. Please do not bother to | acknowledge it. It was so kind of you | to ask me to lunch | with [?] & I | much enjoyed talking | with you. Thank you | very much indeed Yours sincerely John Morris'. Overall, this is a magnificent copy, with an ALS and inscription from the author which were written on the same date. This is a very good (or better) copy. The author's second book, following Traveller from Tokyo. His first book was reviewed favourably by many, but E. M. Forster wrote that the whole book is wise and sane, and quietly unravels Japan and makes it intelligible. This title was written after Morris returned to Japan in 1946 as a correspondent for the B.B.C.
