Book Description

London: Faber & Faber, 1951. First edition, first printing. This is a very good copy. The dust jacket, designed by Joan Hassall, has some slight loss at the head of the spine and toning. It has not been price clipped (10s 6d. net). The boards are sharp in the publisher’s yellow cloth. The text blocks are faintly spotted. There are numerous clippings loosely inserted (mostly reviews). To the front fly, Walter de la Mare inscribes this copy: ‘To dear Siegfried (and George) with love from W.J, June 1951’. Sassoon’s posthumous bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown. In pencil, to p.34, Sassoon annotates in pencil, quoting Robert Louis Stevenson: ‘Science carries us into zones of speculation, where there is no habitable city for the mind of man – R. L. S.’. Overall, this is a very good copy of a fine title – some exceptional signs of ownership. Nicely inscribed by de la Mare to Siegfried Sassoon and his son, George.
