The King of the Golden River, 1st/1st, 1851
Book Description
London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1851. First edition. This is a very good copy. Encased in a wraparound cloth over the original boards, and a uniform olive-green slipcase with gilt titling and five raised bands by Wesleys & Co., London. The paper covered boards are sharp, though with moderate signs of age. The backstrip is delicate and has been repaired at the foot. Internally, the decorative endpapers bear the bookplate of Herbert S. Squance, a known collector of Arts and Crafts work. The tissue guard is present, and further contents clean and unmarked. The initials of ‘H. R.’ are present to the front fly. Very scarce in this condition, and with strong provenance.
A fantasy story, published anonymously and written for the then twelve-year-old Euphemia Gray, whom Ruskin later married. It became an early Victorian classic which sold out in three editions. It contains 22 illustrations by Richard Doyle.
