Gallipoli

Book Description
London: William Heinemann, 1916. First edition, first printing. This is a very good (or better) copy. Exceptionally rare in the jacket, which is notably clean and crisp. Some bumping to the spine tips, and some very slight handling marks. The spine is very slightly sunned. The boards are sharp, but moderately marked. The spine is also sunned. The text blocks are exceptionally bright and clean for this title. The ownership inscription of C. R. Farrer, dated Sept 1916, is present on the front flyleaf. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy scarce in the jacket.
Masefield was invited to the United States on a three-month lecture tour. Although his primary purpose was to lecture on English literature, he also intended to collect information on the mood and views of Americans regarding the war in Europe. When he returned to England, he submitted a report to the British Foreign Office and suggested that he should be allowed to write a book about the failure of the Allied effort in the Dardanelles that might be used in the United States to counter German propaganda there. The resulting work, Gallipoli, was a success. The book is illustrated from official photographs.
