Book Description

London: Arthur H. Stockwell Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. This is a very good copy. In the stunning unattributed dust jacket, which has some small closed tears, light handling marks, and a red spot to the rear panel. Priced at 3/6 to the spine. Two very small tape repairs to the verso. The original powder blue buckram is sharp, with no notable marks. The gilt titling to the front panel and back strip is fine. A dusting of foxing to the text blocks. The author has boldly signed this copy to the front flyleaf in black ink, using her pen name. Below, she adds her initials and dates it September 1933. There are no additional inscriptions. Overall, this is a very good copy of an exceptionally scarce survivor. The only known novel by Ada Irene Bidgway (1890-1934). It was written during a period of convalescence after an attack of influenza – when recovering, she was writing for two hours a day, and completed the novel in three weeks. Prior to ‘Joan’s Romance’, she invented, and was granted a patent for an automatic electric vanity case. An exceptionally scarce title – signed a few months before Bidgway’s death in the following year. WorldCat can only locate two copies, held at the National Library of Wales and The British Library.
