Book Description

A selection of eight original and three copy correspondence from both Peter Cushing and Peter Ustinov. Comprising of three ALS signed by Cushing, a two-page copy letter sent to Cushing with Ustinov's amendments in blue ink, an original telegram send to Cushing. Cushing: Three ALS sent to Ustinov, faux Radiogram in Cushing's hand to Ustinov, Ustinov: Telegram to Cushing, two-page copy letter to Cushing, two-sided reply to Cushing in blue ink, sent from S.S. Belsinhausse, At Sea, a small handwritten note to Cushing via carrier pigeon, a small hand-drawn faux poster on a single sheet, a faux invoice send to Cushing from Amalgamated and General Electronics . The letters are addressed to either Morris Grosvenor, or signed by him. Ustinov explains that the Grosvenors are two characters invented by Cushing and Ustinov: 'Peter and I invented a couple of characters out of the folklore of London, Morris and Dudley Grosvenor, low characters with high ambitions, as their name suggests. they spoke in the lisping accent of London's East End'. It can be assumed that Ustinov is Morris Grosvenor, and Cushing is Dudley. Ten items in all, which offer a fine insight into the humorous friendship between Peter Cushing and Peter Ustinov. It perhaps shows a seldom seen side to Cushing, known primarily for his dark and cerebral roles, who here creates an un-sophisticated and simple character with sophisticated and complex fashion, displaying his acting genius. Ustinov here meets Cushing's genius with his own cockney alter-ego, Morris Grosvenor. Overall, this is a wonderful archive, and one which I thoroughly enjoyed cataloguing with many chuckles along the way. Transcriptions available upon request.
