The Little Karoo

Book Description
London: Jonathan Cape, 1925. First edition, first printing. This is a very good copy. The dust jacket is smart, with some sunning at the spine and some small closed tears. There are some moderate handling marks present. It has been neatly clipped, but retains the price (4s. 6d. net). The publisher s olive buckram is very near fine, but marred by some light bumps to the tips. The lower board blind stamped with the publisher s device. The text blocks are so sparsely foxed. This copy is free from inscriptions and is, overall, in very good condition.
In his introduction to this work, Arnold Bennett writes: 'Who is Pauline Smith? I would reply: She is a novelist. What are her novels? came the inquiry. She hasn t written any yet, I would say, but she will. It is no part of my business here to appraise the gifts of Pauline Smith. The reader will decide for himself whether or not she has unusual originality, emotional power, sense of beauty, moral backbone. This is her first book.' The title, Little Karoo, refers to a region of the veld in Cape Colony (Western Cape), South Africa.
