Book Description

London: Chatto & Windus, 1948. First edition, first printing. This is a very good (or better) copy. The striking Edward Bawden dust jacket has some shelf wear at the top and bottom edges. It has not been price clipped (10s 6d net). The boards are sharp in the original red cloth. The text blocks are free from foxing, though the top stain has faded slightly. Elspeth Huxley has flat signed her name in blue ink to the facing title page. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy of a nice scarce signed title. The true first edition of this work, being considerably more scarce than the Book Club edition published in the same year.
