Book Description

London & Glasgow: Gowans and Gray, 1934. First edition. This is a near fine copy. With the original illustrated glassine dust wrapper, beautifully illustrated by Jessie M. King. Some light surface wear, creasing, and mild age-related toning. The text blocks are clean. A one-page foreword by the author precedes 18 black and white drawings of Kirkcudbright, each accompanied by text. Jessie M. King signs her name to the front fly leaf in black ink with her treble clef flourish. She adds to her signature with a charming original pen-and-ink sketch of a leaping rabbit, executed in her characteristic linear style, with additional pen flourishes. Overall, this is a scarce title, more so with King’s signature and an original pen-and-ink sketch. Jessie M. King's last important book of drawings, a pictorial record of Kirkcudbright where she and her husband E. A. Taylor lived after their Paris years; and a splendid companion volume to her previous topographical volumes: 'Dwellings of an Old World Town' (1909), 'The Grey City of the North' (1910) and 'The City of the West' (1911).
