ASSOCIATION COPY - EXPLORING NORTHERN AUSTRALIA

An uncommon association copy of a compilation of Searcey’s articles documenting his experiences exploring the Northern Territory of Australia. Searcy includes descriptions of the pearl industry and interactions with local tribes people. They were first published in the Register newspaper which employed Searcey as a journalist.

Alfred Searcy (1854 - 1925), was a journalist and public servant. He worked as a sub-collector of customs, rising to the position of sergeant at arms in the South Australian House of Assembly. He joined voyages to the Northern territories and heavily advocated for the development of Port Darwin, thinking that it could become a ‘Singapore of Australia.’
