The War of Steel and Gold by H N Brailsford, Published by Bell, London 1914. A Sudy of the Armed Peace. 1st edition. In stiff cloth covered boards size 19 by 13 cm. 320 pages. Title gold-stamped to front and spine. With the signature of Bertrand Russell in pencil to the front endpaper, dedicating the book to C.O.N. (Colette O’Niel, Lady Constance Malleson) in August 1916 (a presentation copy). This gift came at the start of a love affair between O’Niel and Russell. Minor age toning and spotting to top edges of the boards and above the title, and a few pencil marks in the margins of a couple of pages that refer to Russia. These can be easily removed but might signify a shared interest with Russell. Good to VG condition.
