Essays, Biographical, Critical, and Historical, illustrative of the Tatler, Spectator, and Guardian. Five volumes
Book Description
Five volumes, published between 1805 and 1810, bound in delightful scarlet full straight grain morocco. Gilt decorative spines, titles, bands, decorative borders and dentelles. All edges gilt. Just the faintest rubbing to the raised bands and spine ends. Extremities a little bumped resulting in rubbing, edges with occasional rubbing. No losses to the morocco of the boards, which remains sumptuous and smart bar just the odd mark. Each volume with contemporary bookplate of Rissa to front pastedown. Pencil ownership inscription to ffep / front blank. Some rubbing to ffeps. Volume I with three engraved plates incl. frontispiece; volume II with frontispiece; volume III with thirteen; volume IV with frontispiece; and volume V with frontispiece. Internally, bindings remain tight, and leaves bright and clean bar just the odd spot; plates are a touch spotted, sometimes resulting in offsetting. A truly beautiful early 19th century set.
