Book Description

London: The Nonesuch Press, 1989. This is a very near fine copy. One of nine hundred and fifty copies. Original glassine is without wear. Bound in the original publisher’s brown cloth. There is a vague smattering of foxing to the top edge. Greene’s signature is present on the colophon in black ink. This is copy no. 738/950. There are no additional marks to note. Overall, this is a very near fine copy. The collection includes all of Greene's published epigraphs, arranged chronologically, to serve as a sort of autobiography from his early, "innocent disclosures" to the "uncertainties and fears of old age" he experienced later in life. The title implies that these brief, chosen quotations offer insight into the author's personality, beliefs, and artistic intentions, explaining why he selected them for his works.
