[View of Suez]
Book Description
etching, signed in the plate 'Ioannes Peeters delineavit et excudit'' 100x265 mm, cut to the platemark, some faint stains, small defect at upper right corner, mounted on old paper
Dealer Notes
A rare view of the village of Suez, some 20 years before the first hint of a Canal (by Leibniz, in a letter to Louis XIV, apparently). We see: a landscape with a group of men trading goods in front of a house in lower left corner, some of them on a camel, several pikemen on horseback at right, the village of Suez in background at right, the Red Sea in distance. It is said to come from a collection listed by Wurzbach 10 as ‘Ansichten aus Arabien, Judäa, Chaldäa, Syrien, Jerusalem, Antiochia, Aleppo, Mekka etc.’. The other plates are engraved by Gerard Bouttats after Peeters' drawings, so it is assumed that this one is too, though the signature looks more proprietary.
