Book Description

A presentation copy from the artist and her husband. 'The Little Fairy Sister', Ida Rentoul Outhwaite and Grenbry Outhwaite, pub. A & C Black, 1923, 1st ed. Patterned paper-covered boards with blue cloth spine, the boards a little darkened to the margins, the corners 'furred'. 91 numbered pages and four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Illustrated endpapers. Pale spotting throughout, but never heavy. Plate at p. 32 with short closed at the gutter, not affecting the image. Light creasing to the corner of pp 79/80. Plates on laminated paper show very mild yellowing to the margins. A good copy overall, distinguished by the signatures of Outhwaite and her husband, Brenbry. Outhwaite [1888-1960] was one of the most prominent illustrators of children's works in Australia, collaborating with her husband on several titles. The book has been signed by both 'To our good friend, Captain Mathieson D.S.O.' and dated Xmas 1923. A visiting card for Mr and Mrs A R Outhwaite is slipped in. Furthermore, Grenbry has written to the margin below the the plate titled 'Bridget cuddled up against a fat baby Kookaburra' 'Original bought by H E Lady Forster', i.e Her Excellency Lady Forster wife of the Governor of Australia, Sir Henry Forster, between 1920 and 1925. Presentation copies from Rentoul Outhwaite are vanishingly rare on the market. I have not been able to identify the recipient, but, given that Grenbry noted that the original artwork for one of the plates was bought by Lady Forster, I wonder if Captain Mathieson DSO was part of the Governor's entourage?
