Book Description

Literary Forgeries, The Chancellor's English Essay, by E[dmund] K[erchever] Chambers, pub. Blackwell, Oxford, 1891. Chambers [1866-1954] was a literary critic and scholar of Medieval and Tudor drama. This is a rare first edition of his prize-winning essay, published here in the original 37-page pamphlet. The front cover was reattached at some point in the past with conservation tape. The covers have touches of creasing, grubbiness and foxing, and, in addition, the front cover has a short, closed tear, but this is a vanishingly rare item of interest considering Chamber's distinguished later career as a critic. He covers a good deal of ground, from Classical Antiquity to Chatterton and MacPherson, as well as mentioning some lesser-known examples of literary forgery, all the while putting them into a historical and psychological context. Of added interest, this copy bears the bookplate to the inside of the front cover of 'Kinn Hamilton McIntosh', who wrote a series of successful crime novels under the pseudonym of 'Catherine Aird'
