Book Description

255x140mm. January 4th, 1990. This is a fine copy. Pamphlet, with gold stitching, with The Lion, from the Coat of Arms commissioned by The Observer in 1961 to the front panel. Lettered in black ink, noting ‘A Service of Remembrance & Thanksgiving’, as occurred at St. James’s Church, Piccadilly, London. The covers are markedly sharp. Internally, details of the service can be found. It began with The Bidding Prayer, and several other recitals. Touchingly, the following would be ‘William Hazlitt: A Selection from essays of 1825 on Painting, Death and Old Age in Artists’ as was Bawden’s bedside reading in the last week of his life. Very affecting. Other readings and performances include ‘Edward Bawden: A wartime letter to Charlotte’ by Peyton Skipwith; ‘S.S. Wesley: Thou wilt keep him in Perfect Peace’ by the Choir; ‘Bach: Andante from Violin Concerto No 1 in A minor’ by Louis Ullmann; ‘John Betjeman: Essex’ by Roger de Grey; ‘Benjamin Britten: St. Nicholas’ by the Choir; the Address by Sir Hugh Casson and others. The footnote reads: ‘Edward Bawden died peacefully at his home in Saffron Walden on Tuesday 21 November 1969’. This beautiful, but touching pamphlet is in fine condition.
