Publisher's blue cloth, black lettering to spine. Heavily worn, with significant scratch damage to boards & spine, loose and chipping to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine rendering publisher details near illegible, extremities heavily bumped resulting in losses, a few other stains & damp spots to boards. Spine cocked. Lacking ffep & rear endpaper. Bookseller's stamp and extensive annotations on the work in pencil to front pastedown, similarly to rear pastedown and final leaf, verso of title page and verso of Part I leaf. Some staining to margins of prelims, just one or two spots besides; binding rather tender. A scarce first edition, first impression; this work was printed in a run of 3,000, of which only 2,000 are first impression examples.
