Book Description

228x178mm. Single sheet. Headed at Abbotswood House, Buxted, Sussex. In black ink and in the author s hand throughout. Dated 16. 1. 84. It reads: 'Dear Pam, How very nice to hear from you after so | long a time! So glad you have been enjoying | Poldark's Cornwall. Writing the darn thing | made me feel terribly nostalgic & wanting to go | back and live there; but the thought of the | upheaval of moving turns my stomach | over, & anyway we have many pleasures here | & usually manage two visits to Cornwall for years. | (Thrice in 1983). | I am indeed very distressed to hear that | you still have all those old books! I had thought | - & hoped they had all moulded away on | mildewed bookshelves or been disposed of at Church sales. | Alas, they turn up now & then. | One of the penalties of getting old is waiting | each year for the Christmas cards & wandering | who won t be sending them any more. This year | we scored 100%, though the ones from your parents | did not arrive until Christmas Eve. They are | indeed very old we had no idea, though obviously | we know they were battling on. But the last time | we saw them cannot have been more than about | eight years ago when they came to supper with us | at the restaurant and Rosamund & (?) as were then | returning in St. Agnes; & they both seemed in very | good form them, though we know your mother had | had heart trouble. | How very sad that they are | as they now are. Give them our love when you | see them or next write. | Rosamund & (?) have come back to the | States; they now have two boys & a girl; & the | family (not always (?) has who commst always far away) | regularly descend on us for the whole month of August. | Andrew is a Fellow of Balliol (economics) | & very high powered. He is at present in Zambia, | heading a seven-man delegation to advice | (?) & the I. M. F. on (?) financial (?), No | children; his wife can t have any; & they do not | wish to adopt. We took over. We managed (?) (?) (?) last year, & Jean is already dropping hints to me | about this. | Our best love to you both. Winston.' A fine intimate and friendly letter, mentioning Poldark s Cornwall which was published a year prior, and familial and friendly matters.
