Book Description

When The Lion Feeds, Wilbur A. Smith, Hardback, Heinemann, 1964, First Edition, Second Impression Scarce first edition copy of Wilbur Smith's first novel (the only one to show Wilbur A. Smith as opposed to Wilbur Smith as the author). A second impression printed before publication. The book introduces the Courtney family, becoming a series that Smith would follow throughout his writing career. After 10,000 copies were sold the Publication Control Board banned the book in South Africa on the grounds of blasphemy and obscenity, the ban only being removed in 1975. The binding is tight with a slight lean, the boards clean with slight crease and nibbling to the spine. Gilt lettering is clear and bright. The endpapers and pages are clean without tears, marks or inscriptions with minor foxing to the very odd page. Page edges are toned in line with age. The clipped jacket has retained its colouring well. Nibbling to the top and bottom of the spine and some rubbing to the creases. All considered a very good copy. Will be dispatched promptly, fully insured and professionally packaged.
