Book Description

Letters to Emil, Henry Miller (ed George Wickes), Carcanet, 1990, First Edition, First Impression Edited letters from Miller to his boyhood friend Emil Schnellock from the 1920s and 30s provides an interesting insight into his early adulthood. The book covers the letters from around the time of his divorce (1924) from his first wife and subsequent marriage to June Mansfield, the femme fatale in his Tropic of Capricorn, to the publication of that very book in 1934. Miller had lost touch with Schnellock after changing schools but became reacquainted in the early 20s with Schnellock playing a significant mentor role over the next decade. The book is in near fine condition. The binding is tight and straight, the unmarked boards clean with the gilt lettering to the spine bright and the pages and endpapers clean without marks, tears or inscriptions. Light foxing to the top edge. The unclipped dust jacket protected in a clear removable cover is near fine, largely unblemished with some minor darkening to the inside top edges of the returns. Will be dispatched promptly, professionally packaged and fully insured.
