Book Description

London: Longmans, 1960. First edition, first printing. This is a fine copy. The dust wrapper is without notable wear, but some very light handling marks, and if to scrutinise, some very light rubbing at the bottom edge. It has not been price clipped (16/- net). The boards are free from chips and marks, and the text blocks immaculate. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in fine condition. A working-class classic. Set in the North, the novel follows the life and work of Arthur Machin, who becomes a professional rugby league player. It was the author's debut novel and was later adapted into a 1963 film starring Richard Harris, with a directorial masterpiece by Lindsay Anderson.
