An uncommon first edition, first impression of Burgess's sixth novel. Publisher's red cloth, gilt titles to spine, remnants of a paper Boots label to cover, spine lightly bumped to the head & tail and extremities similarly, minor scuffs to boards, textblock edges spotted, black marker line to bottom edge, spotting & light foxing to margins of first and last leaves occ. affecting text, remnants of Boots slip to rear pastedown & cancellation mark similarly. This work was withdrawn following a libel from the secretary of Banbury Grammar School, which inspired the work following the author's teaching stint there in the 1950s. Heinemann then pulped the remaining examples. It was later reissued without the recognisable & libellous elements.
