Book Description

A very scarce copy of this limited edition poetry book, based on the lineage of the Stewarts in Scottish history, and featuring key figures and battles, including William Wallace, and 'Robert Brus'. The author, Douglas Ainslie ((1865-1948), was a Scottish poet, translator, critic and diplomat, who associated with figures such as Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, and Marcel Proust. The Song of the Stewarts; Prelude, by Douglas Ainslie. Published by Turnbull and Spears, Edinburgh, 1909. First, limited edition. Fifty copies were printed on Whatman paper - this is an unnumbered example. A good hardback with blue linen cloth over boards and vellum spine, with a black and gilt title label. Cover with some soiling and bumping. Some fraying to cloth at corners and vertical edge. Rear with one inset bump and some light white spotting.  Overall text is very good - bright and clean throughout, with no spotting. With rough cut vertical and lower edges - a little age toned to the edges. Gilt to top edge. Looks unread - there are still a few uncut vertical edges. Text in English. x + 202pp + (3) Publisher's advertisements at rear. Weight approximately 644g (unpacked). Dimensions: Approximately 228mm high x 148mm wide x 27mm deep.
