Book Description

A finely produced limited edition from the Nonesuch Press, A Stitch in Time; or Pride Prevents a Fall by James Laver reflects the Press’s characteristic blend of typographic elegance and understated craftsmanship. Issued in 1927 in a numbered edition of 1525 copies for sale in England and America, the work presents a light, satirical poem in a style consciously echoing eighteenth-century verse, a period in which Laver had a well-known scholarly interest. The present copy, number 1367, retains its original stiff boards with the distinctive marbled paper dustjacket and printed title label, a format typical of Nonesuch publications of the period. The text is printed on high-quality laid paper and remains bright and clean. A later pictorial bookplate of W.S. Adams, signed "Runciman pinx. 1973", is affixed to the front free endpaper, adding a discreet note of later provenance. A Stitch in Time; or Pride Prevents a Fall. By James Laver. Printed for the Nonesuch Press, by Richard Clay & Sons, Ltd., Bungay, 1927. "Of this edition 1525 copies have been printed for sale in England and America. This is number 1367." A very good copy of this most attractive issue by Nonesuch Press. Stiff board covers are wrapped in a marbled paper dustjacket with printed title label to front. Some light wear and bumping to extremities, and some cracking on the dustjacket fold along spine, but a most appealing publication. Provenance: Bookplate of W.S. Adams to first free endpaper. With a design by Runciman, dated to 1973. Text pages are bright and clean throughout. Printed in a high quality ivory laid stock. Text in English. 27pp + (1).  Dimensions: approx 295mm high x 194mm wide x 5mm deep.  Weight: approximately 166g (unpacked).
