One of the earliest book-length personal narratives of the First Opium War (1839–1842). Sir Arthur Cunynghame, then a young officer in the British Army, recounts his experiences accompanying British military operations against Qing China. It combines eyewitness military observations with descriptions of Chinese society, Hong Kong in its infancy as a British possession, and the ports and waterways encountered during the campaign.
