"Steam-Trip to the North of Baghdad" is among the earliest detailed accounts of steam navigation on the Tigris River. It records settlements, antiquities, river conditions, and local populations at a time when modern transportation was only beginning to penetrate the region. "Memoir on the Province of Baghdad." is a remarkably complete account of mid-nineteenth-century Baghdad, containing detailed information on population, ethnic and religious communities, trade, occupations, public buildings, administration, and economic life. It is one of the principal primary sources for the study of Ottoman Baghdad. One of the most significant parts of the work is the large (52" by 32") folding map of the ground plan of the City of Baghdad which shows a high level of detail and accuracy, even more remarkable as the surveys were carried out surreptitiously with details and distances paced out and written on shirt cuffs.
