A handsomely bound end of the nineteenth edition of this classic work of literature and natural history which has never been out of print since this its first appearance in 1789. The Natural History section is in the form of letters addressed to Thomas Pennant and Daines Barrington. The Antiquities section, describing the history of the parish of Selborne, is also in epistle format but not addressed to known correspondents. Volume One includes the Pennant letters and the Garden Kalendar (here printed in its entirety for the first time, with introduction by Samuel Reynolds Hole, Dean of Rochester from 1887); Volume Two the Barrington letters and the Antiquities, with Appendices in Latin, the Bibliography and the Index. Edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847-1909), Curator of the Bird Collection at the Natural History Museum, London (see enclosed letter). The plates include many fine studies of birds by the famous Dutch ornithological illustrator, Johannes Gerardus Keulemans (1842-1912), who lived and worked in England

Loosely inserted: 1906 letter from editor on Natural History Museum notepaper.
