Copper engraving [Engraved for the London Magazine. 1761] Image 163 x 491 mm, Sheet 227 x 530 mm unmounted One of the earliest obtainable views of the city of Philadelphia, illustrating approximately a mile of the bustling waterfront of the largest city in the British Colonies at the time of publication. The print is based on the famous large scale view of the city by George Heap, first published in 1754. The scene presents a view of the city from South Street to Vine Streets and features the steeples of Christ Church and the State House, which is also included as an inset view along with the Battery. The Delaware River in the foreground is populated with large and small commercial and naval vessels, with Windmill Island to the far left of the scene . Condition: Trimmed to image, with ‘engraved for the London Magazine’ above image missing, and laid to album sheet, vertical folds as issued, toning to sheet.
