Book Description

introduction by Alan Moorehead; end-papers illustrated by coloured maps showing Serengeti National Park (front) & animal migration route (rear); b/w. frontis. photo. of Michael Grzimek who sadly died in an aeroplane crash & was buried in the Serengeti. Illustrated by colour & b/w. photo's. with a few b/w. drawings & a b/w. map of Africa. A most important book, for it was instrumental in the crucial extension of the Serengeti National Park. Published after the death of Michael Grzimek when his plane entangled with a vulture at Ngorogoro. His father, Bernhard was one of the most important conservationists of his time. He was the head of Frankfurt Zoo for nearly 30 years. The film of this book won an Academy Award in 1959. Also, loosely inserted, is a handwritten pencilled letter from Serengeti Park Game Warden Myles Turner to 'Kitty' (probably Kate Gillie, later his wife) in which he begs for the return of a photograph his mother has sent to her because: "it makes me look like an ape". It seems she did not accede to his request as the photograph is also present.
