Book Description

An attractive copy of the first collected edition, in contemporary calf with a sympathetically-replaced spine. Of chief interest for the book plate of K.T. Butler. Kathleen Teresa Blake Butler, M.A., 1883 – 1950, was affectionately known as ‘Blazing’ Butler for her red hair and strength of character. Educated at Newnham, she became a fellow of Girton and then, variously, a Lecturer in Modern Languages, Director of Studies for Modern Languages, Lecturer in Italian, Vice Mistress of Girton and finally Headmistress of Girton, Cambridge, 1942-49. Her published works include A History of French Literature, 1923. She campaigned tirelessly for the admission of women to Cambridge University, not just to Girton, and was instrumental in achieving this in 1948. She was a founding member of the journal Italian Studies. She collected books, Italian in particular, and her collection was presented to Cambridge University Library in 1951.
