Book Description

Originally written in 1937 and revised 1955. Limited edition (34/60). Signed by Morris Cox. Hardback. Designed throughout by Morris Cox who also fashioned the blocks and set, printed & bound the book entirely by handwork standards. Set in Matura Script and Jefferson Gothic. Printed in various colours on Barcham Green Roger Powell handmade paper. Quarter natural linen, with paper covered boards. Spine printed in black, red and blue. Front board covered in paper merging shades of brown, blue and black, on which are successively mounted a disc of white paper to represent the moon, dried grasses and transparent tissue paper. Back board similarly covered but without the white disc. Japanese endpapers, free leaves doubled and lined with grey Ingres. Acetate dust jacket. The poem itself ‘is an attempt to recapture imaginatively something of the subjective experience of an original “serious Fool”, or a pagan officiant, as he passed through the various stages of the rite which involved his “death’ and “resurrection”’. This is a work of visual poetry and a masterpiece of creative book design.
