Book Description

A Stanhope viewer is a small optical viewer, usually made from turned and polished bone as a miniature charm. This one is modelled as a pair of binoculars, and has six miniature views of Ripon visible in one lens and six miniature views of York visible in the other. They were invented by René Dagron in 1857, and use special glass lenses showing microphotographs of tourist sights. This probably dates from about 1900.
