Book Description

1st Edition. 13.2 x 20.2 cm khaki green cloth with gilt stamped titles and publisher’s device to the spine 176pp with original unclipped jacket priced at 12s 6d net. Bright gilt titles with firm sharp corners. There is slight mottling to the boards and a hint of fading to the very tips of the spine. Internally the book has no name, inscription or bookplate and is generally very clean with just a band of toning on the free endpapers where the dust jacket does not reach. The dust jacket, which is now protected in a removable, clear cover (not shown), has a bright front panel and spine. The rear panel has a little spotting and a 3cm dark mark on the bottom edge. There is minor rubbing to the corners, a 0.3 cm chip to the top of the rear joint and a smaller one at the foot. There is a 0.5 cm closed tear to the head of the spine and a few very tiny nicks to the top edge of the rear panel with light associated creasing. All in all an excellent copy of Sillitoe’s second book, a collection of nine short stories with the title story being later made into a film of the same name in 1962.
