Book Description

1st Edition, 1st Impression. 14 x 22 cm recently rebound in full green morocco with 5 raised bands and gilt stamped titles to the spine, [iv] 139[1]pp with frontispiece and 14 illustrations as called for. Signed, inscribed and dated by the author to the title page and also by Edward Garner, whose portrait forms the frontispiece of the book. The book is contained within a green cloth solander box with gilt titles to the spine. Generally very good with a touch spotting and marking mainly to the first few pages. This book concerns the famous Cottingley Fairy photographs taken by 16 year old Elsie Wright and her cousin 9 year old Francess Griffiths in 1917. Edward Garner a member of the Theosophical Society worked with Doyle to investigate further after Elsie’s mother had shown them at a Theosophical Society meeting. Once Kodak had confirmed that the photos consisted of one exposure only and that all the figures of the fairies moved during exposure, which was “instantaneous” the two men became certain that the photographs were genuine and Doyle published their findings in this book. It took until 1983 for Elsie to admit that they had copied fairy illustrations from Princess Mary’s Gift Book and placed them on hat pins in the bushes - ironically, one of the stories in this book was Bimbasi Joyce by A Conan Doyle! A scarce Conan Doyle signed copy of this book, made rare by the additional signature of his fellow investigator Edward Gardner.
