The Alexandra (Newport and South Wales) Docks and Railway was formed in 1882 from the former Newport Docks Company. In 1897 it absorbed the Pontypridd, Caerphilly and Newport Railway which had been built to bring coal down from the South Wales coalfield to Newport. At the end of 1922 the company was grouped into the Great Western Railway.
