India Photograph Album 1944.
Book Description
India Photograph Album 1944. In stiff imitation leather boards size 28 by 19 cm. A 40 page album with 85 photos of wartime India. Almost all pages have been used. The images are each approximately 9 by 6 cm. Places that appear include Delhi, Bombay, Imphal, Agartala, Simla, Solan, Candy, Jehu, Rangoon, Akyab and Kashmir. Subjects include people at work and at leisure: policemen, laundry workers (“dobies”), cricket players, shopkeepers and stall holders, beggars, fruit wallahs and holy men. Other more unusual photographs show camel trains, a funeral pyre and Father Christmas riding an elephant. One page is devoted to the trains and roads to Simla. Four photographs at the end of the album are not tipped or pasted in: they include two of women in British army uniform. Apart from these four all the images have typed captions beneath them that give place names and other explanations. The soldiers are not named but could be identified with further research. VG condition.
