Photographic portrait frontispiece of D’Ollone with his facsimile signature, tissue-guard, then one folding map showing the course of the mission and 126 photographs arranged on 83 plates. Half-title, title page (printed in red and black). In the deluxe publisher’s binding of navy blue cloth with gilt figure of a fearsome Chinese warrior embossed on upper board, red lines around edges, gilt lettering to spine. Top edge gilt. Tips of corners sl rubbed, bottom edge of pages lightly shelf soiled. Publisher’s “New Publications” post card loosely inserted at the front. A near fine copy.
