Dealer Notes
Beverland (Middelburg 1650 - London 1719) was a not inconsiderable scholar, with a family connexion with the Vossii. He had a marked obsession with sex, which made life difficult in Calvinist Holland, less so in Restoration England. This was the first written (though not the first published) of his books, dealing somewhat pruriently with the sexual desires of women. Though most is veiled in the decent obscurity of a learned language he does give us (p.43) a few English lines from the Earl of Rochester (dignified with gothic lettering), retailing a bizarre sexual fantasy. The pornographic publisher Charles Carrington published an English translation in 1905, The Law Concerning Draped Virginity: An Academical Study, of which no UK library admits to owning a copy.
