Historiae Aethiopicae libri decem, nunquam antea in lucem editi.
Book Description
small quarto (211 x 150 mm), dedicatory epistle by Opsopaeus in Latin, otherwise Greek text throughout, printer’s device on title and final leaf, early marginal annotation in Latin and Greek, contemporary calf, blind-stamped frame with gilt floral corner pieces, gilt ornament in centre, rebacked, original spine laid down
Dealer Notes
Adams H-174; VD16 H1673; Hoffmann II, 197. Editio princeps of a text discovered just eight years earlier in Corvinus’ library, during the sack of Buda. The book is often classified as the first European novel. Unusual on the market in a contemporary binding. First printings of Greek texts were collectible in the 18th-19th centuries, which has ensured a fair survival, but by the same comparatively few copies outside the oldest libraries have escaped rebinding
