BIBLE. English. Authorised. The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New
newly translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently
compared and revised. ...
Edinburgh, Printed by James Watson, one of His Majesty's Printers, 1715
Unpaginated. The Bible text ends on Xx4, followed by The Psalms of David in Metre with its
own sequence of signatures A-C8, D4, E2. Leaf E2 is a blank. Herbert 934. Engraved title
page signed by Robert Ward. The text is red-ruled throughout. Bound in black morocco. The
central panel is decorated in a classic early herringbone design using foliage tools. The outer
panel features large foliage sprays in the corners, lunette tools, additional foliage tools, and
small stars. The spine has five raised bands, fully gilt in the panels with a saltire cross
and small tools between the arms. Soft green Dutch floral gilt endpapers and all edges gilt.
Slight rubbing on the corners and a recent small loss of surface on the front joint. A beautiful
example of this iconic Scottish binding style. Loosely inserted in its envelope is a letter on
University of Glasgow Library stationery, dated March 1968 and addressed to Hon. Fiona
Campbell, discussing Lowden's appeal for manuscript sources for his research on James Scott
