Book Description

202x126mm. Single sheet on Betjeman's 43, Cloth Fair, London, E. C. 1. headed paper. It has unfortunately been torn down the centre, and restored with tape. It remains its legibility, and judging by the way in which it was torn, appears to have been done so upon opening. It reads: '8/7/66 | Mr John Betjeman | very much regrets his late | reply to the kind invitation | of Lord and Lady Molesworth | for July 13th. He had hoped to be able to say yes | and come, but was waiting the | words of his BBC television | producers who were not sure of | the dates they required him. | And now alas he has to go | to Grantham Lines for | 13th or 14th and so will | not be able to come. | Such is the misfortune of | being a paid journalist. | He hopes to be able to see | Lord & Lady Molesworth on | some future occasion and | very much regrets he can t come this | time. He was at | Lancing yesterday or the | day before, of which he | is making a film in Sept- | ember.' An interesting letter, written entirely in Betjeman's own hand, but speaking in the third person.
