Book Description
175x113mm. Single sheet, folded. Written on all four folds. Headed at Gosse's personal address, 29 Delamere Terrace, Westbourne Square. W. Dated October 15th 1889. It is addressed to Hallam Tennyson, the eldest son of Alfred Lord Tennyson and discusses Tennyson's poem The Throstle (Summer is coming, summer is coming. | I know it, I know it, I know it. | Light again, leaf again, life again, love again, | Yes, my wild little Poet. ). Four lines of toning to the verso of the front and third panels. It reads: 'Dear Sir, | I was absent from | London when, about the | middle of September, The | Throstle was sold | to The New Review . I left | the proof, corrected by | yourself, with directions | that it was to be made | the basis of every copy | issued. My manager, who | is a very exact man, tells | me that, not liking to | leave it to a clerk, he | himself made the copy, | carefully transcribing, as he | is sure, every line and | every dot. That he is | correct in thinking that | he did this is borne | out by the fact that | in all the American | publications of the poem | which we have seen, made | from copies issued simul- | taneously from our London | office, the three heres and | the should are properly | introduced. I enclose | one of these American | versions that you may see | this for yourself. I have | made the most stringent | inquiry into the matter, | and cannot find that | the responsibility for this | misfortune lies with us. | I am very | sorry that you should | have this cause of com- | plaint; and I am | sorry, too, that you | should have thought it | proper to communicate | your complaint to me in | terms so rough & peremptory. | Believe me to remain, | Dear Sir | yours faithfully | Edmund Gosse | Hon Hallam Tennyson'. Professional and deeply reverent, Gosse attempts to deal with an error in the publication of Tennyson s The Throstle . An insightful letter into the publishing industry, written by a great, and on the subject of a great.
