In 1933, at the age of 18, Fermor set out on an extraordinary journey by foot from the Hook Of Holland to Constantinople. This book, hailed as a classic of travel writing and published when the author was 62, is the first volume of a trilogy and recounts his journey as far as the Middle Danube.
This is a true first / first (not the published in conjunction with The Book Society version). A fully intact errata slip is laid in as issued and the map between pages 16 and 17 is intact and fully attached.
The book is in near fine condition. The binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. There is some fading to the bottom edge of the front cover and the spine. There is minimal shelf wear to the top edge of the spine. The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. There is a small mark to the rear end papers. The unclipped dust jacket, protected in a clear, removable cover is in very good condition with some fading and nibbling along the top edge of the front cover, spine and back cover.

The second book in a series of three books narrating the author's journey on foot across Europe from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople in 1933 - 34. This book begins with Fermor crossing the Maria Valeria bridge from Czechoslovakia into Hungary and ends when he reaches the Iron Gates where the Danube formed the boundary between the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Romania.

Left as a manuscript by Leigh Fermor when he died in 2011 for Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper to turn into the final "chapter" of a remarkable trilogy. Covering the final leg from the Iron Gates to Mount Athos the book is in fine condition,
