Dealer Notes
First edition. The ‘offprint’ auction catalogue for a pen-and-ink drawing ‘La maison de Vincent à Arles’ (which depicts the painting ‘La maison jaune’), drawn by Vincent van Gogh in Arles in September 1888, with an illustrated autograph letter signed to his brother Theo van Gogh on the verso. This was offered as lot 52 in Christie’s auction of Impressionist and Modern Art, held at Christie’s London on 24 June 2003, and this rare ‘offprint’ catalogue was printed in a smaller edition than the catalogue for the complete auction.

The offprint catalogue includes a preface by Jussi Pylkkänen, an essay by Professor Ronald Pickvance, a full transcription of the letter (with English translation), and an appendix with updated English texts of two other letters by Vincent van Gogh, revised on the basis of the manuscript offered in this catalogue. The drawing sold at this auction in 2003 for £845,250 and was subsequently sold by Christie’s New York on 5 November 2013 for $5,485,000.
