Reprint of the 1885 first illustrated edition. Eighty-Seventh thousand. 8vo.(7.3 x 5 inches). viii, 292 pp. Illustrated with a frontispiece map, with tissue guard, illustrated second title page, and 24 full page mono plates by various French artists, including F. J. Merril, T. Moller, J. Ladmiral, and others, although none are credited, aside from their signatures on some of the illustrations. First and last few pages, plus a few scattered leaves throughout and the blank endpapers are foxed. some loss to the bottom of the page in the margin of the last two text leaves and two blank endpapers, very slightly affecting the copyright notice at the foot of the final page. Neat four line inscription, dated 1900, on a front blank free endaper. Contemporary full vellum binding with yapp fore edges. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt.Some toning to the vellum but overall a very good copy in a plain, but attractive binding. --- Prideaux, Bibliography of the works of Robert Louis Stevenson, No. 11, note on page 29 listing the first printing of this edition in 1885.
