First and only edition. 8vo. pp. 237; 11 port. plates; slight staining to f.e.p., else very good in the original pebbled cloth, gilt. A presentation copy, inscribed to the title-page “for Mrs. Simpson & family with the kindiest salutations from the Author 17-8-31”, with the later ownership inscription of Geo. P. Simpson to front pastedown.

Waters, a Scot, spent much of his later life in India, but as a young man served as Residency Surgeon at Bushire on the Persian Gulf. In 1874 he obtained leave, and travelled overland through Persia and Russia to England, and back. He published an account of his travels as A Rapid Journey from the Persian Gulf to England (Bonbay, 1876), and the substance of this 40pp. book is reproduced at pp. 31-75. In 1875 Waters transferred to Bombay, and the remainder of his reminiscences relates details of his time there, of his travels after his retirement on the Continent, and his world tour to North America, Japan, Hong Kong, and Australasia.
